Blocks of the week - BOWs

This week Loyal Union Sampler block is an easy one... compared to last week's block Castle Wall.

Joten tänään kirnusin voita - helposti!

The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt - kirjaan on kerätty 1920 -luvulla amerikkalaisessa The Farmer's Wife aikakauslehdessä järjestetyn kilpailun kirjesatoa. Viljelijöiden vaimoilta kysyttiin haluaisivatko he, että heidän tyttärensä menisi naimisiin maanviljelijän kanssa. Niiden kirjeiden inspiroimana Laurie Hird suunnitteli erilaisia blokkeja, jotka hän julkaisi kirjana (+CD, jossa blokkien mallineet) vuonna 2009.  Blokit ovat - tässäkin - kokoelmatilkkutyössä 6" x 6". Blokkien nimien "historiaa" kirjassa ei ole esitelty / kerrottu, mutta niille annetut nimet liittyvät jollakin tavalla kirjeiden sisältöön. Esim. Churn Dash -blokin yhteydessä olevassa kirjeessä luetellaan erilaisia hyödyllisiä maataloustöitä, joista Mrs. M.H.M. kirjoitti saavansa todellista iloa ja onnellisuutta. Tietenkin yksi niistä hyödyllisistä taidoista oli voin kirnuaminen!

Mielestäni Churn Dash on yleisesti käytössä oleva nimi tälle blokille, mutta tietääkö kukaan sille suomalaista nimeä? Minulle blokista tulee enemmän mieleen juustomuotti / -kehä kuin kirnu. Vai tulisiko mieleen ennemminkin kirnun mäntä?

Mitä opin tänään, osa 1. - 4 -neliö

What I learnt today?

I learnt to make a scrappy 4-patch with Lori's way!

... ja haluaisin jakaa oppimani sinun kanssasi;o)

Quilty Fun Sew along:n 4- neliöt ovat pieniä (2,5" x 2,5"), en sen takia puhu mitoista, vaan näytän sen miten ne tehtiin uudella, hauskalla tavalla. Koska jos innostut niitä kokeilemaan, niin teet ne varmaan omilla mitoilla;o)

Aloitetaan leikkaamalla eri kankaista sopiva määrä neliöitä, vaikkapa 10 kpl. Niillä pääsee jo alkuun.

Minä leikkasin 18 kpl 3" x 3" neliötä = määrä jonka tarvitsen + kaksi ylimääräistä.

Aseta 2 erilaista neliötä oikeat puolet vastakkain ja ompele niiden ylä- ja alareunat yhteen. Eli sinulla on nyt 5 ommeltua neliötä.

 Nyt puolita neliöt ompeleiden suuntaisesti... minun palani ovat kuvassa kaksinkertaisena 1 1/2" x 3". 

ÄLÄ SILITÄ saumoja...

 ... vaan ompele kaikki palat yhteen pötköksi! Itse taittelin ommeltaessa saumanvarat suunnilleen tummemman kankaan puolelle. Niin ja muistathan tarkkailla, ettet ompele samanlaisia kankaita vierekkäin;o)

ÄLÄ vieläkään SILITÄ saumoja!

 Leikkaa ensimmäisestä kahden kankaan suikaleesta puolet pois... eli jos leikkasit alussa 3" x 3" neliöitä, leikkaa nyt 1 1/2" pois.

Koska missään vaiheessa ei vielä ole silitetty mitään...

 ... jäljelle jäänyt puolisko taipuu melkein luonnostaan seuraavan palan päälle. Kankaat ovat oikeat puolet vastakkain.

Nyt puuhaillaan lisää viivaimen ja leikkurin kanssa;o)

 Eli leikkaa taas saman levyinen kaitale, minä leikkasin 1 1/2" levyisen.

En malttanut leikata kaikkia neli-neliöitä heti, vaan halusin tarkistaa, onko mitat todellakin kohdillaan tällä tavalla... ja silittelinkin;o)

 OK! 4 -neliö on 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", kuten pitääkin olla;o) VAU!

 Nyt vaan jatketaan leikkaamista pötkön loppuun asti. Huomasin, että alkupäästä pois leikatulle kaitaleelle jäi pari loppupäästä... joten mitään ei tarvinnut heittää hukkaan.

Vaikka alussa sanoin, etten mainitse mittoja, niin mainitsin silti - useasti. Toivottavasti niiden avulla tästä tarinasta tuli ymmärrettävämpi!

  

Quilty Fun Sew Along quilt is progressing well. Although I told, that I'm gonna sew blocks together during Christmas break, I didn't do it. Why? Because Lori told us that the sashing stripes are different widths. So it's better to wait more instructions!

LUS: Castle Wall

Kylläpä lujahti mukavasti ohi tämä kaunis pakkaspäivä...

tai ainakin reilu kolme tuntia siitä... puuhastellessa Castle Wall, Loyal Union Sampler blokin kanssa.

 Aloitin mallineiden piirtämisellä freezer -paperille. Tosin ruskeat neliöt (1 1/2") ja kulmien vaaleat kolmiot (puolitettu 2 5/8" neliö) leikkasin ilman mallineita (= tarinan riskinotto osio). Leikkasin kankaat ja sitten ne pitäisi saada jotenkin onnistuneesti yhdistettyä...

... edessä todella monta Y-saumaa!

Onneksi SBS blokkeja ommellessa olin oppinut jo melko hyvin hallitsemaan y-saumat, joten tänään selkäpiitä ei enää niin karminut kuin aikaisemmin. Vaikka edellisistä Y-ompeluksista onkin jo aikaa...

 Siitä se lähtee... ensimmäiset ruskeat neliöt (4 kpl) on ommeltu kahdeksankulmioon...

... ja silityslaudalla odottavat 4 muuta ruskeaa ympärillään vinoneliöt (timantit) ja puolisuunnikas.

Eli ensimmäinen 'kierros' Y-saumoja ommeltu;o)

Ihan hyvältä näyttää... puolet toisesta Y-saumakierroksesta ommeltu!

Vähän kyllä jänskättää, minkä kokoinen blokista tulee... ja muotoinen.

Viimeinen kierros edessä! HUH! hiki!

Onneksi tässä vaiheessa jo pääsi mittaamaan, että ei ainakaan liian pieni blokki ole tulossa.

Huh! Tällaisen blokin jälkeen sitä joko rakastaa tai vihaa Y-saumoja!

Lopuksi vielä ulkokulmat paikoilleen...

ja tunnelmien kirjaus ylös...

Noh, mitäs se Fenix nyt siihen tunkee!

 Ai, onkos se kello jo niin paljon? Sinulla onkin jo hieman ärjy ilme.

Otetaan nyt vielä pari kuvaa uusimmasta LUS blokista...

Blokin malli on todella mielenkiintoinen, mutta 6 ja puoli tuumaisena en sitä ehkä kokonaiseen peittoon käyttäisi. On sen verran työläs blokki! Mutta mittojen muuttaminen suuremmaksi houkuttaa... Hauska malli! Pidän kovasti timanttineliöistä ja kahdeksankulmiosta keskellä!!!

Oi, taidan rakastaa Y-saumoja;o)

"Oven Mitts" - 'Some like it hot'

I promise you that I won't start any new project in this month... anymore.

But I allowed to myself this one, because I completed today an UFO... hah-haa, LOL, my friends! ;oD

When I for a while ago organized some of my drawers I found this obscure-looking thing.

... looks really vague...

I remembered that many years ago (maybe in 2008-09 or earlier!) I saw a nice, good-looking pincushion somewhere in blogland. I wanted to make it... but I has never got stuffed it. Why? I don't know?!? I didn't find any instructions for it, but it seems to be English paper-pieced.

Today it took one hour...

... and after that hour... it looked like this.

THE FIRST finished UFO in 2014!!!

If you wonder why I'm so happy about such a small finished thing... it's because I made - secretly - one New Year commitment for 2014, although I HATE to make them!

Be Inspired By the Stories...

As the last time we met, I implied you about a new BOW...

I knew already last year that the same Yahoo -group, now named as Quilter's Book Club, with whom I sewed the Sylvia's Bridal Sampler blocks few years ago, starts a new BOW round of Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt. Because I have FWS book, why should I wait another day or two to start to make FWS blocks.

We don't live here forever... or do we?

In 1922, The Farmer's Wife magazine posed this question to their readers: "If you had a daughter of marriageable age, would you, in light of your own experience, have her marry a farmer?" The magazine at that time had 750,000 subscribers, and received over 7,000 letters. The best answers to this question are included in this book, along with the traditional quilt blocks they inspired.

How did you already get there... only a second is passed, when I put those blocks on the floor...

well, I must wait then...

Yesterday I told you that I won't write about CWD blocks before February, but I can't be not to show...

After Battle of Springfield block I noticed that I have now a good amount of completed blocks.. and I was lucky to find nice sashing fabrics last night... hopefully I calculated right!... and there is enough of them...

If you wonder, why there is two different-colored cornerstones?... It's not a mistake;o) 

TADAA!!!

I have 16 blocks sewed together;o)

When I have sewn Sylvia's Bridal Sampler blocks together, I have noticed that it's little bit boring to sew all 121 blocks at the same time together... maybe this way even the top of the sampler quilts are sewed... 

some day;o)

Hmm... I must remember THIS during the journey of Loyal Union Sampler...

CWD: Battle of Springfield

Jan. 12, 1963 Rachel Young King Anderson wrote in her diary: The 12 days of this new year have been crowded with the events too numerous and too exiting for my broken pen to mark or my little book to contain. A week ago one of our near neighbors brought home the dead body of his son and also one of his friend's sons from Arkansas to be buried. They sickened and died in camp. - A few days passed off quietly and this whole western world is thrown into the wildest confusion by the sudden appearance of 2,000 rebel cavalry who made battle at Springfield; after fighting six hours they (the rebels) are repulsed. - (quote from R. 7. Battle of Springfield

I was thinking some time, how should I sew this block.... Shall I foundation piece it or shall I try rotary cutting... Well, I decided to do both way! A star should be pretty easy, even though it's quite small: about 2 1/8" x 2 1/8" finished.

... and I even succeeded with it quite well;o)

But then there is those two rectangles with narrow triangles...

I decided to sew them with freezer paper.

 ... esittelen lyhyesti, miten sen tänään tein :o)

Aloitin piirtämällä freezer paperille blokin osan, jonka halusin ommella...

1. Silitin freezer paperin oranssin kankaan nurjalle puolelle, kokonaan. Sitten taitoin paperin piirrettyä viivaa pitkin, trimmasin saumanvaran. Asetin vaalean kankaan alapuolelle siten, että kankaat ovat oikeat puolet vastakkain.

2. Nyt en ommellutkaan paperin läpi, vaan täsmälleen paperin taitoskohdan vierestä, niin kuin piirrettyä viivaa pitkin. Eli nyt hurruutellaan todellakin kieli keskellä suuta;o)

3. Silitin juuri ommellun sauman. Samalla freezer paperi kiinnittyi uudestaan kankaaseen, joten saumanvaran trimmaus sujui helposti.

4. Toistin kohdat 1 - 3.

Toivottavasti tämä sepustus hieman selvensi ompeluani freezer paperin avulla;o)

Jostakin syystä pidän enemmän paperin läpi ompelemisesta. Ainakin tuntuu siltä, että saan sillä tavalla tarkemmin ommeltua kuin freezerin avulla... Voi olla, että se on vain tunne!

Toki freezer paperilla on etunsa! Esim. samaa mallinetta voi käyttää useamman kerran. Tänäänkään ei tarvinnut piirtää kuin yhden kerran tuo blokin osa, vaikka ompelin niitä kaksi kappaletta;o)

Now I'll take a three-week break. The next CWD block day is in February...
